Show Stopped, Stand Taken: Jasmine Sandlas

The Incident

The concert that took place in Delhi encountered something unusual. Jasmine noticed how a woman felt uncomfortable and how some boys were continuously trying to make her feel ridiculously unsafe. She made sure that she kept an eye on them. Post some time, it came to her notice that some boys were continuously trying to force themself onto the girls and harass them. Jasmine immediately intervened and told the security guard to kick those boys out, making sure that woman in her concert space felt safe.

Call to Action

Something that India reports daily is how women feel unsafe, no matter what the space is. Be it travelling for work or just enjoyment, news articles regularly talk about the safety of women being a question. In such an environment, watching a woman uplift another by ensuring that women who just want to enjoy their life feel safe knowing that the person they admire is there to support them feels surreal. Jasmine made a clear statement, “Aapa gawanga hi nahi jad tak kudiyan safe feel nahi kardiyan oye”, meaning that She would not sing until woman feel safe. She made sure that the boys were kicked out.

Dhurandhar

The singer recently sang a song called Shararat that was featured in the movie Dhurandhar. Post the incident, people are referring to her as ‘real life Dhurandhar’. It feels immensely proud when such a great figure chooses to directly resort to a solution rather than just ignoring the issue. Let’s be honest, had Jasmine ignored the issue, maybe the girl would never have found the courage to visit a concert or talk about it, but this would not have harmed the singer, but she did not choose this. She made it very clear that she will ensure the safety of women no matter where she is.

Personal Note

Being a woman, the best part is watching women uplifting women and the incident that happened did not just protect that particular woman. Instead, gave others the belief that if they attended Jasmine’s concert in the future, their safety would not be in question. It instilled a trust in every woman that she can, and she should not just stand for herself but also protect the peace of her fellow mates. Women like Jasmine stand as an inspiration to many and India feels proud to have such a ‘Beti’.
