Pip was a small, bright-eyed, white-coloured puppy. His dream was simple but noble, he wanted to become a certified guide dog to help people in need. Somehow, he reached the Southeastern Guide Dogs Canine University, a place where only the most capable dogs are trained to serve. As he approached the gates of the University, Pip’s heart sank for a moment. All around him, he saw other dogs who were much stronger, taller, and more intimidating than him, while he felt like just a small pup with nothing but a dream.

Facing the First Challenge: The Physical Test

Pip was amazed as he gazed at the university. He appeared for the physical test, which included a height check. Although Pip was shorter than the other dogs, he strained upward until his ear just barely touched the minimum measurement required. This allowed him to pass the physical test and move forward into training.

Struggles During Training

During the lessons, he found it difficult to raise his paw properly to participate, often getting ignored because he was so small. When it came to field work, the pressure was even higher, he failed to give the correct directions to his blindfolded trainer, leading her to lose her balance and fall to the ground. He even faced problems pressing the stop button of an automated feeding machine, which caused his food to spill everywhere.

Finding Inspiration in Ace’s Legacy

Feeling demoralized, he sat near the university's memorial hall, where photographs of exceptional dogs were presented that did well in guiding people, helping police as part of a dog squad, etc. His eyes were drawn to a featured photograph of a dog named Ace, an alumnus of the same university who had done exceptionally well in helping people. Seeing Ace’s legacy made Pip feel deeply motivated once again.

Using Intelligence Instead of Strength

Now Pip used his mind; he used books to match the height of the other dogs sitting in the classroom, making him clearly visible in class. He was also now able to give correct directions to his blindfolded trainer, and he started jumping to press the stop button of the automated feeding machine.

The Final Examination and a Crushing Setback

After training, it was finally time for the examination. An examiner came to the university to conduct the test, and all the dogs lined up with the trainer. When it was Pip's turn, he managed to give directions to his blindfolded trainer for a long distance, but unfortunately, he got confused at the last moment and caused both the trainer and the examiner to fall to the ground.

Disqualified but Not Defeated

After being unable to clear the test and making both his trainer and the examiner fall to the ground, Pip was disqualified and removed from the university. Pip felt deeply emotional. He watched the statue of Ace outside, which was made to inspire the dogs studying there, and saw his course mates being selected.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Suddenly, a loud sound drew his attention; a truck loaded with garbage and mud was heading toward a pit at high speed. Unfortunately, a blind woman was standing there, finding it difficult to move in the correct direction. All the dogs moved quickly to save the lady, however the gate was closed, and none of them managed to get there except Pip, who utilized his short height and slim body to escape through a narrow pass between the gates.

Acting swiftly, Pip managed to give directions to the blind lady at the right time, making her reach a safe place near the road.

From Failure to Hero

Seeing his exceptional courage and swift response, all the dogs of the university and the trainer cheered for him. Even the examiner praised his remarkable action by giving him the same honor that Ace had once received. In just a few moments, Pip proved that he wasn't a failure, but a hero in the making.

What “Pip” Truly Means

It means something small that has the potential to grow into something much bigger, just like a seed.

I tell myself daily that I know many people in this world are much more talented, innovative, creative, and skillful than I am. But the only thing I can do is to work smart and hard with the right intention. Even if everything feels shattered, I must not stop thinking that I’m not competent enough, or that I’m not made for a particular work which I have tried with all my effort. It’s possible that I can fail in achieving what I want, but if the purpose and intention were correct, then God himself opens gates much better than those we thought were good for ourselves.

“In short, I just remind myself daily that I'm like a pip!”
